Rural Youth Involvement in Development and Agriculture_Summary
During the month of June, Karianet discussed rural youth involvement in development and agriculture. Facebook followers and especially young people highly engaged in answering the weekly posted questions. When asked about what rural youth need in order to become more involved in development and agriculture, many said that what’s really important is to trust in youth’s capabilities and to take their opinion into consideration especially since youth nowadays have more access to information and are more educated than previous generations; in other words, if they are given the chance to use their maximum potential, they can do wonders. Also, mentorship, authentic education and the needed authority will allow them to create the real positive changes effectively. Not to forget the need of financial support and more opportunities. Talking about the significance of rural youth’s personal input in development, many believe that youth are the end user of many development plans and they’re tomorrow’s leaders. And in order to ensure the success of such plans, one must check these end user's needs before implementing it. This can be achieved by doing some research about youth in rural areas and discovering some insights.

When asking about the roles that rural youth are given nowadays, most of the youth and adults believe that these roles aren’t enough and youth’s voices aren’t well heard in their communities. This is triggered by many reasons. One of which is that youth are most likely encouraged by their parents/ family to be involved in organizations that are politically affiliated as their parents believe that this is how they can secure their future. For this reason, it’s not surprising to learn that politically related activities are more often organized by rural youth. It’s also worth noting that there exist some organizations who are mainly concerned with education, health and women empowerment, however, their impact is minimal due to their limited resources. For this reason, the collaboration between local municipalities and these NGOs is highly recommended, and the role of NGOs shouldn’t be limited to engaging youth in its activities, but also should empower them through trainings and workshops (on development, agriculture, social entrepreneurship, and many others) that can intensify their skills and capabilities.

Finally, and in order to make agriculture and farming be more attractive to young people, people suggested that agricultural and basic management training sessions/short courses should be offered by the ministry of agriculture or by academic institutions. These courses, along with other researches should spread awareness and stress on the importance of organic food.  To encourage the engagement of the young generation in agriculture, it would be crucial to create an economically safe environment for investments such as establishing a national social security system for farmers.
