Nutrition

A household may be said to have attained food security when all of its members have food of a sufficient quantity and quality to maintain and active and healthy life. Yet the mere fact of having enough food available in the market (or even in the domestic sphere) does not ensure that all members will consume the right foods to improve their nutritional status. Food must also be affordable and households must choose to eat food that is sufficiently diverse to promote a healthy and active life as well. The choice of healthy foods is one of the essential building blocks of nutrition security. As obesity now coexists alongside food insecurity in many parts of the world, nutrition is about more than having enough energy to live. It is about ensuring that the poor are able to consume foods that prevent diseases associated with poor nutrition, and above all, sustain children in their early development.
